Vitamin D
Vitamin D treatment is vital when tackling vitamin D deficiency within the body. With our portfolio of registered Vitamin D products, we can contribute to a more effective treatment of vitamin D deficiency, rickets, vitamin D supplementation, and deficiency prevention.

Vitamin D deficiency
VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY is a condition where the body’s vitamin D level is below the normal range (optimal vitamin D level in blood >100 nmol/l).

The facts:

1
More than 80% of the world’s population does not have the desirable amount of vitamin D; in Europe, more than 40% is vitamin D deficient.

2
Vitamin D controls 3% of the human genome.

3
Vitamin D is produced in the body during the skin’s exposure to ultraviolet light.

4
For optimal vitamin D production in the skin, 25-30% of the skin should be exposed to sunlight without protection creams.

5
For efficient vitamin D levels in the blood, we should be in the sun every day at midday.

6
A study in the Baltic States shows that this region also lacks vitamin D during the summer.

7
Vitamin D can be taken daily or once a week. Weekly administration improves adherence to the regimen and achieves the target concentration more quickly.

8
Vitamin D toxicity is rare. It can occur with high daily doses (10 000-40 000 IU/day) over a 3-month continuous period.

9
Taking vitamin D not only strengthens your bones but can also reduce the risk of the following diseases:
- Tendency to infections, including infuenza
- Degenerative nerve diseases
- Oncological diseases
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular diseases and hypertension
- Obesity
- Malabsorption syndrome
- Fibromyalgia
- Autoimmune diseases
- Osteoporosis
Causes of vitamin D deficiency

Symptoms
Many non-specific vitamin D deficiency symptoms make it difficult to diagnose the condition.
Vitamin D strengthens our immune system, helping us fight against viruses and bacteria. If you often suffer from colds, other respiratory infections, or flu, your body might lack vitamin D.
Lack of energy and the desire to rest or sleep are often signs of vitamin D deficiency. Even a tiny vitamin D deficiency can lead to daily fatigue.
Vitamin D deficiency can cause depression, especially in older people. Researchers have found that reversing vitamin D deficiency can alleviate the symptoms of both regular and seasonal depression.
Vitamin D fights infections and inhibits inflammation, which helps heal various injuries. Wounds from surgery or simple injuries heal more slowly and with difficulty if vitamin D is lacking.
In older people, vitamin D helps prevent osteoporosis and reduces the risk of bone fractures. People with osteoporosis may suffer a fracture even from a minor accident. Osteoporosis has no symptoms or signs until the bones break, often called ‘ the silent epidemic’.
Vitamin D contributes to healthy bones by improving calcium absorption. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone pains, including lower back pain. Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to chronic muscle pain.

Treatment

Preventive doses are prescribed when the optimal level of vitamin D in the body (100 nmol/l-150 nmol/l) is not achieved.

Therapeutic doses of vitamin D are prescribed in cases of significantly low vitamin D levels (< 100 nmol/l).

The level of vitamin D in the blood can be measured at any blood testing laboratory.

The Lithuanian population needs to take extra vitamin D supplements during the dark season – from September to May. In other months, vitamin D supplement is recommended, particularly for those at risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D can be taken daily or once a week. Weekly administration improves adherence to the regimen and achieves the target concentration more quickly.

We suggest choosing registered vitamin D medical products for more effective treatment, rickets, supplementation, and prevention of deficiency. Widely available dietary supplements do not meet the highest-quality requirements as medical products. According to a recent study, the concentrations of active substances in as many as 50% of the food supplement products tested did not comply with the levels indicated on the packaging.
